Why is Dutch such an accessible language for English and German speakers?
The answer is that these languages are family-related.
Ever wondered why many words in the Dutch language look so familiar at first sight?
It is because of this kinship.
But Dutch is also easy to learn because it has ‘borrowed’ lots and lots of words from languages like French, Italian, Indonesian and Malay and many other languages. Recognizing familiar features can help you build a larger vocabulary in a short period of time. Before long a new student, who is aware of this, is able to communicate with Dutch people.
But be careful.
Among these new assets you may encounter several false friends. The Dutch word ‘slim’ (smart), for instance, has totally different meanings in German and English.
In this workshop we will take a look at English, German, French and other languages and see how they relate to Dutch. Understanding these relations will help you gain more insight into the grammar and vocabulary of Dutch.
You will learn Dutch faster and with less difficulty. You’ll be surprised how much you understand as a total beginner.
No knowledge of Dutch is required for this workshop.
