TAIKA (meaning ’magic’ in Finnish) is a very special choir that has in just six year grown from a small hobby choir of just eight singers to a serious choir of more than twenty singers. Its conductor, Master of Music Karla-Maria Toiviainen, founded TAIKA in 2012.

In a short time, the choir has achieved a valuable role in the Finnish community in The Netherlands. TAIKA also aims to make an impact in the choir scene generally in the Netherlands, and hopes in the future to collaborate also with other international and Dutch choirs in the country.

TAIKA’s mission is to promote, often together with partners, Finnish culture and female choral music in The Netherlands. TAIKA also wants to provide a peer community for Finnish female singers.

TAIKA practices in The Hague. The choir has a wide repertoire, ranging from folk to pop, with an emphasis on Finnish female choral music. However, the choir enthusiastically performs songs from all around the world. This charming video shows a surprise performance in The Hague’s Passage.

The choir performs in a wide range of events hosted by businesses and organisations. In the spring of 2015, the choir performed abroad for the first time – naturally in Finland. In the summer of 2017, TAIKA traveled to Verona and in the fall of 2018, TAIKA visited a choir festival in London. In April 2018, TAIKA participated for the first time in a choir competition and was commended for its good discipline and excellent presentation.

The choir normally hosts concerts bi-yearly, in the spring and at Christmas, the next one being on the 26th of May. This year TAIKA also will host a concert together with Chorus Marinus, a visiting male choir from Finland. The choir is also making its first record in summer 2019, and has plans on participating in further choir competitions. You can find more information on the upcoming shows from Facebook (@naiskuoro) or on the choir’s website www.taikachoir.nl.

An old favourite at the Fair, this year TAIKA are planning a very special performance.
