Having lived in three countries so far, one of our international student volunteers, Meerle Stoopman from The International School of The Hague (ISH), tells us about what makes her Feel at Home in The Hague.

I feel at home in the Netherlands because I grew up here and because my family members all live here. But when I was 8 years old I moved to a different country and I ended up living internationally for 8 years.

During this time I grew apart from Holland, I only visited during the summer holidays but now that I am here I feel at home again.

I feel freer here, I am able to talk to the locals because I speak Dutch and by playing sports I meet new people. Moving back to Holland I felt welcomed by the people, not only because I am Dutch and speak the language, but also because I feel like most Dutch people are friendly and welcoming in nature. Their ability to speak English also makes it easier and gives us a welcoming feeling and nice place to live.

There is also plenty to do in Holland, which makes living here more fun and enjoyable.

A Bit About Me

My name is Meerle Stoopman and I was born in Holland. So far I have lived in Holland, Sweden and Dubai and I moved back to The Hague this summer.

Interests and hobbies

I really enjoy travelling and listening to music. I also enjoy taking pictures of nature and listening to music. I love hiking through beautiful landscapes and love to do gymnastics, although it has been a long time since I have done the sport.
