Water is enemy and friend of the Dutch. The land was shaped by water, and so has the Dutch culture. Through centuries of struggle to contain floods and disasters, the Dutch have created a safe environment, but how safe is it?

In this entertaining talk, Ruud Hisgen will discuss water-related words which are characteristic of Dutch culture, and tell you about the fascinating history of water management.

Ruud Hisgen is teacher and managing director of Direct Dutch Institute, the oldest language school for Dutch in The Hague. Ruud has over thirty years of experience teaching Dutch to expats. He is also an author and regularly hosts workshops about (Dutch) culture and literature.
